The Overview of Steel Sector in Southeast Asia project, commissioned by Agora Industry in 2024, aimed to assess decarbonization pathways and investment dynamics for the steel industry across five ASEAN countries. Given the sector’s significant emissions profile and the region’s rapid industrial growth, the project sought to identify feasible low-carbon technology options and the policy and market conditions needed to support a transition to cleaner steel production.
PT Geni Buana Nusantara undertook the analysis by evaluating low-carbon technologies such as direct reduced iron (DRI) and hydrogen-based processes, and by examining growth potential, supply-demand dynamics, trade deficits, and foreign investment trends. The scope of work included technology assessment, market and investment analysis, and scenario-based pathway development. The project delivered strategic recommendations for policymakers and industry actors, including priority technology adoption paths, policy measures to de-risk investments, and opportunities for regional cooperation to accelerate decarbonization in the steel sector.
